Get Cooking

By Ruth Barnard

It's nearly Valentine's day so it's time to turn on the music and cook a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs for those we love. This dish is inspired by the romantic scene from Disney's Lady and the Tramp where the doggie duo share a candle lit dinner together at Tony's restaurant.

PARENTAL SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED: You must get the permission and help of a parent before you start making this dish
and don't forget to keep your hands and workspace clean.

Meatball Ingredients:

  • Mince Meat*

  • 1- 2 tsp Oregano (fresh or packet)

  • Pepper

  • Salt

  • Garlic (one large clove)

  • 1 large egg

  • 3 tbsp Breadcrumbs

*Beef and/or pork meat is optional. We used 200g of mince meat which made about twenty small meatballs. We found five to seven small meatballs per adult is a generous helping.

Sauce Ingredients:

These quantities create enough sauce for about four people max.

  • One large onion

  • Two - three garlic cloves

  • One tin of tomatoes

  • Three-four large basil leaves

  • Pinch of sugar

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Your choice of cheese as an optional topping

Make the Meatballs

1. Finely chop the oregano and peel and crush the garlic.

2. Mix all of the ingredients together in one bowl.

3. Make the meatballs. They should be small so that they cook easily, about two small teaspoons of meat is enough. Roll them in your hand to create neat balls.

4. Put them on a clean plate and cover with glad wrap and place in the fridge.

5. While the meatballs set into shape you can make your sauce.

Make the Sauce

1. Finely chop the garlic, onion and two-three large basil leaves and then slowly cook with the oil on a medium to low heat until soft.

2. Add in the tin of tomatoes or tomato passata. Half fill the tin with water and stir into the sauce. Let the sauce thicken by cooking it for another ten minutes and add a pinch of sugar.

3. Add in the milk and stir then gently add in the meatballs. Do not stir or move the meatballs just let them sit in the sauce and cook.

4. Cover the pan with its lid half on. Let the meatballs cook in the sauce for about 20 minutes.

Cook Spaghetti, taste and serve!

1. Ten minutes after cooking the meatballs and sauce prepare a pan/pot of water for the spaghetti pasta, add a pinch of salt and cook the spaghetti for about 10 minutes.

2. To check the meatballs are cooked take one out of the pot with a fork and cut it in half to make sure they are not pink inside. To check the spaghetti is cooked, take a strand of spaghetti from the pot, allow to cool and eat.

3. When all is cooked taste the sauce and add pepper and salt as desired. Finally tear one fresh basil leaf and add to the sauce.

4. Put on ‘Bella Notte' from Lady and the Tramp, set the table and if you like serve this dish with a topping of cheese or a herb garnish.

Buon Appetito!
