Edible Potted Plant Recipe

This homemade chocolate mud mousse topped with Oreo crumb soil is completed with one sprig of mint shooting up from the centre. It’s delicious and easy to make.

REMEMBER: always ask permission from a grown-up before baking

What you need:

  • 2 cups cream OR double cream

  • 1 ¾  cups of plain chocolate (we went with Whittaker’s creamy milk chocolate).

  • 1 pack of Oreos

  • A sprig of mint for each dessert

Equipment:

  • Heat proof bowl and wooden spoon

  • Cooking pot

  • Whisk (electric whisk optional)

  • Rolling pin or hammer

  • Clean tea towel

  • Small glasses or cups

  • Saucers (optional)

SERVES FOUR: Our recipe fills two short orange juice glasses which are best shared between four. This is delicious and light, but it’s very rich so small portions are important.

What to do:

Make sure you aren’t hungry when you start making this because it will be very hard not to eat it before it‘s finished!

Chocolate Mud Mousse:

  1. Measure out 2 cups of cream and whip until fluffy and thick. Then set aside in a cool place.

  2. Break up roughly 1 ¾ cups of chocolate and put it into your heatproof bowl.

  3. Get an adult to help you to melt the chocolate on the stove.
Bring an inch of water to a simmer in the cooking pot and sit the bowl over the hot water. Make sure the pot stays gently simmering and stir the chocolate with a wooden spoon until it is completely melted.

  4. Let the chocolate cool a little, but don’t let it set. Then pour it into your bowl of whipped cream and whisk them together until well blended, light and thick.

  5. Pour the mousse into your glasses and put them in the fridge to set overnight.

Chocolate Oreo Soil:

  1. Split open the Oreo’s and scrape out the cream centre with a blunt knife or a spoon.

  2. Wrap the biscuits up in a clean tea towel and use an elastic band to make sure they are wrapped in tightly. Hold the towel firmly, making sure there are no gaps for crumbs to escape from.  Now pummel the biscuits inside the tea towel with a kitchen hammer… or use a rolling pin to roll the biscuits into crumbs.

  3. Keep covered and set aside.

Sprig of Mint:

  1. Check if your mousse is set by gently tipping the glass to one side. If the mousse is set, it should stay in one place.

  2. When your dessert is set, sprinkle the Oreo soil on top, as much or little as you want.

  3. Pick a sprig of mint and put it in the middle of your mousse just before serving.

  4. Serve on a small saucer for an added ‘plant pot’ effect.

Extra ideas:

·         Add worm lollies to the chocolate mud.

·         Use pansy or lavender instead of mint. Some plants are poisonous so get an adult to help you when choosing the plant to use and be extra careful.

·         Try layering different types of biscuit soil and chocolate mud.
