Grab some wool and scissors and create a cozy pompom and then learn how to whip up a fun pompom bookmark!

What you need:

  • Wool

  • Recycled Card (the thicker the better)

  • Scissors

What to do:

There are many ways to make a pompom and you can even use your hand instead of card. We use the card method because it keeps your hands free to tie knots, but feel free to experiment…

  1. Choose wool colours you want to use.
These might be your favourite colours, those that look best together or maybe the colours of your favourite sporting team or school.
Tip: If you want to use more than one colour of wool, tie the new colour on as you go.

  2. Cut a rectangle of thick card (we used an old egg carton).
The bigger you want your pompom the bigger your card should be.

  3. Next cut a gap in the middle of the card.

  4. Start wrapping the wool around the card.
To make it easy to finish the pompom you should keep a gap on each side of the wool.
You can stop when your wrapped wool is about 3cm thick.
Idea: You could keep different colours separate as you wrap them which will mean that the pompom will have separated colours too… or just mix them all together.

  5. Tie a long single piece of wool around the middle of the wool bundle you wrapped around the card. This long string becomes the page marker for your pompom bookmark, so make sure it’s as long as the book you would like to use it in.
Next, pull it as tight as you can and tie a knot on the other side.
Tip: The tighter you tie it the better the pompom will be, so you could get an adult to help.

  6. Cut the wool where it loops over, on each side of the knot. This will create little pompom tassels.
Then, fluff out the tassels to make a messy pompom.

  7. Give your pompom a haircut to make it look how you want.
Tip: Save the clippings of wool to use as stuffing or collage materials.

With your new pompom making skills, you can transform ordinary hats, keyrings, pillows, scarves and more into pompomtastic creations!
