The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is like a treaty that almost all countries around the world have agreed to.
It is like a big list of children’s rights.
The New Zealand government signed this treaty in 1993.
Did you know that Article 28 of the UNCRC says that everyone has the right to education?
Article 29 explains that you have the right to an education that tries to develop your personality and abilities as much as possible and encourages you to respect other people’s rights and values and to respect the environment.
There’s a kid’s version of the UNCRC at http://savethechildren.org.nz/new_zealand/nz_programme/UNCRCfriendly.pdf.

Ever wished you didn’t have to go to school?
Maybe you’d be surprised to know there are heaps of kids who wish they could go to school!
Millions of children around the world don’t get the chance to go to school.
There are lots of reasons – maybe they can’t afford to; maybe they’re too sick, or have to look after a family member who is unwell; and sometimes they have to work to support their families.
But all children have a right to be educated.
And that’s why Save the Children works to help make sure children all over the world get the chance to go to school.
Meet some of our friends from around the world who are trying hard to make a better future for themselves – and their families:

|
MIRIWAIS, 14, is one of 65 children in Kabul who work on the streets and one of 5,000 who was offered schooling and work training. The income that Miriwais earns is important to him and his family. |

|
SAMINA, 8, at Save the Children school in Pakistan. “My mother and I are very happy that I can go to school and have a chance to learn. My father died and my family is very poor”. |
|
AZADA, 9, with her friend in Afghanistan. Azada came top of her class and with the help of Save the Children was able to continue to go to school. Only 13 percent of females in Afghanistan can read or write.
