Poppy Alert!

Take up the Passchendaele Poppy Challenge!

What is Passchendaele?

The Battle of Passchendaele (pronounce passion-dale) happened in our history – 12 October, 1917, during the First World War.
It was a horrible disaster – the worst for our country.

Two thousand seven hundred New Zealand soldiers were either killed, wounded, or listed as missing on that one day.

This year marks 90 years since the Battle, so on October 12 there will be a big commemorations in New Zealand and around the world. A commemoration is when everyone gets together to think about what happened; to pay our respects to our dead soldiers and remember what they did to save our country.

Among the many who were killed at Passchendaele was the 1905 All Blacks captain, Dave Gallaher (pictured).
Ten other All Blacks also lost their lives on the Western Front.

Take Action!

What is the Poppy Challenge?

New Zealanders all over the world are being asked to remember the Battle of Passchendaele.
That included YOU!

• Wear a poppy when the All Blacks play in Europe later this year.
• Place a poppy at cenotaphs or war memorials in your home town on October 12.
• If you had relatives/whanau at Passchendaele or on the Western Front, learn more about them.

Does your family or extended family have photos, letters or postcards? Find out as much as you can about them.

The Poppy

The poppy is New Zealand’s symbol of remembrance because the poppy was the first flower to grow from the churned up battle fields and the soil of soldiers’ graves during the First World War.

Your school may be selling poppy packs as a fundraiser. Ask your teacher.
