JASMINE LOCK, 11, loves animals, especially dogs.

She interviewed international dog breeder Judy Vos of Clan-Abby Kennels in Clive, for Upstart Magazine.

Jasmine lives at Clive and goes to Havelock North Intermediate School.

My first question for Judy was ‘why do you breed dogs?’

Judy said she has always loved animals – in fact, her whole family are animal lovers.

“With dogs, you can all get involved in their care,” she said.

Lots of dogs!

Judy breeds Border Collies. She has one chocolate, called Bob; two Blue Merles, called Crystal and Merlyn; six black and whites, called Page, Robin, Thunder, Sue Cusa, Peggy Sue and Princess.

She also has one group of puppies. They are gorgeous.

Judy said she used to have a red Border Collie, called Boots, but he died of old age.

Puppies bring smiles

I asked Judy what she enjoyed most about breeding dogs.

“I love seeing the happy faces on people when they get to take their puppy home. They always have a smile.”

Sleepless nights

Judy said her least favourite thing about breeding dogs was having to get up in the middle of the night to care for them!

This interview was really fun and an awesome experience.

Jasmine has a dog of her own.

His name is Harry (Harry Potter).

“Sometimes he is a little bit naughty but he only does things like stealing the toilet paper, or mum’s bra out of the washing pile, and sometimes even Dad’s gumboot out of the garage.

“Most of the time he is good though and is always ready to play.

“His favourite toy is his ‘non-non blanket’ (a piece of towel that he ripped up). He lies in the lounge with it in his mouth – it’s really cute.

Dogs can hear sounds that are too faint for us to hear, and also can hear noises at a much higher frequency. Their hearing is so good that they probably rely more on sound than on sight to navigate their world.
