CHILD SAFETY:

UPSTART POLICY for the PUBLICATION of IMAGES and WORK

Purposes of hard-copy and online publishing:
The purpose of Upstart Magazine and the website (www.upstartmag.co.nz) is dual: educational and developmental.

Both exist to promote the positive development of children personally, educationally, and socially. As contributors, children learn to create (e.g. in writing, art), to express, and to share their lives and creative experiences within their school and wider communities – most especially, the community of children.

Publishing may include examples of children’s writing or artwork and images of children doing activities relating to the presented material.

Syrup Publishing Ltd are the publishers of Upstart Magazine. Syrup Publishing Ltd is owned jointly by Sue Reynolds and Sam Hoyle (see About Us).

GUIDELINE 1:
Syrup Publishing Limited will publish the material only in its own magazine (Upstart) and on its own website (www.upstartmag.co.nz).

GUIDELINE 2:
Syrup Publishing Ltd publishes children’s material in Upstart Magazine and online for the following four main purposes:

  • To provide all children in Aotearoa, New Zealand, the opportunity to have their thoughts and opinions listened to – and respected – thereby contributing to their sense of self-worth and identity.
  • To build NZ’s most widely read children’s magazine and website that will compete successfully in the commercial publishing sector, thereby helping children to shape the media’s portrayal – and public perception – of children and young people growing up in Aotearoa.
  • To treat children with respect and integrity. To provide inspiration and encouragement for them to participate fully in their communities – both locally and globally.
  • To support schools to educate the student in accordance with the national curriculum

Privacy and publishing:

Syrup Publishing Limited cannot control who has access to the information published in
its printed publication (Upstart Magazine) or on its website (www.upstartmag.co.nz).
In recognition of this, Syrup Publishing Ltd has taken steps to safeguard the privacy of children and to comply with the Privacy Act 1993. (See Parent/Legal Guardian Permission
Form and Submission Guidelines).

GUIDELINE 3:
Syrup Publishing Ltd acknowledges that it cannot control who reads the magazines or accesses the website on which children’s images or material is published; or the copying, by visitors to these websites, of images of the children and their work.

GUIDELINE 4:
The authorisation forms for teachers or parents therefore offer two alternatives:

  1. Identify children in the magazine or on the website by first and last name, age, and school.
  2. Identify children in the magazine or on the website only by their first name and year at school.

Under no circumstances will students’ home addresses and telephone numbers be available on the website.

Copyright and online publishing:

Upstart Magazine and www.upstartmag.co.nz want to publish original material that children create at home, at school, and in their communities. This includes artwork, such as drawings and paintings, as well as stories, poems, reviews, and other literary work. Original material created by children attracts protection under the Copyright Act 1994.

Children own the copyright to their own artistic and literary works. Syrup Publishing Ltd will not publish the works or any image of a child without the written permission of the child’s parent/legal guardian.

GUIDELINE 6:
Syrup Publishing Ltd will not publish a child’s image or work without written authorisation from the child’s parent/legal guardian. Syrup Publishing Ltd will immediately remove all material relating to a child from its website if requested by the child’s parent/legal guardian.

Syrup Publishing Ltd’s management of print and online publishing:

A child’s image and work may be chosen for Upstart Magazine and www.upstartmag.co.nz if it meets this purpose and if the parent/legal guardian has consented to publish the child’s material. The material chosen must also meet the standards required.

For example, if the child’s work is to be published in Upstart or on www.upstartmag.co.nz, it must not: defame anyone, be objectionable from a human rights point of view, be obscene, or infringe the copyright of third parties (for example, the work must not contain substantial portions of another person’s copyright material without permission).

GUIDELINE 7:
Syrup Publishing Ltd will not publish material online that may defame anyone, be objectionable from a human rights point of view, be obscene, or infringe the copyright of third parties.
